MEET THE TEAM
Richard Lane MVB MCRVS
Richard is one of the partners. He qualified from University College Dublin in 1981 and worked in Lismore Co. Waterford for 2 years doing mainly dairy and beef practice. He subsequently worked in Wexford Town for a year again in a mixed practice before joining Abbeyville in 1984. His areas of interests, are doing dairy practice especially herd health and vaccination programs. He has carried out a pilot project on Johnes disease control eradication in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Food. Outside of work Richards’s interests include hill walking, fishing and he is also a keen Munster rugby supporter.
Fergus Smith MVB CertDHH
Fergus is one of the partners. He qualified from University College Dublin(UCD) in 1992 and worked in a mixed practice in Co. Mayo and West Cork before joining Abbeyville in 1995.His areas of interest are bovine and equine practice particularly herd health, fertility and ultrasonography. He completed a post graduate certificate in Dairy Herd Health at UCD in 2014. He also has a keen interest in small animal medicine. Outside of work Fergus’ interests include cycling, skiing, supporting Munster and Douglas/Carrigaline Rugby and keeping his kids entertained evenings and weekends.
Michael Ryan MVB
Michael is one of the partners. He qualified from University College Dublin in 1997 and went to England where he worked in small animal practice in Essex and Kent. He then returned and worked in a mixed practice in Co. Kilkenny before joining Abbeyville in 2001. Michael is married to Rose has 4 children. His hobbies include being a taxi driver for the kids and playing bad golf and has also just taken up cycling. Michael’s special interests include orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
Donal O Sullivan MVB CertSAM
Donal qualified from UCD in 2010. He spent 2 years working in mixed practice in Northern Ireland, before returning home to Cork to join Abbeyville in 2012. Donal has a special interest in challenging medical cases, dermatology and dentistry. Donal also runs the acupuncture and pain management clinics. In 2018, He completed the UCD post graduate certificate in Small Animal Medicine.
Paul Humphreys MVB
Paul Humphreys graduated from UCD in 2000. He has spent the majority of his 17 years as a vet in mixed practice apart from 3 years of exclusively small animal work in the north of England. He was working in west Cork for the last eleven years in a mixed practice. In his spare time, Paul has a few cattle and a cavachon Dougal who, along with his wife Deirdre and 2 sons Ruairi and Jacob, keep him on his toes.
Máiréad Foley MVB
Máiréad graduated from UCD and joined the Abbeyville team in September 2017. Since joining the practice, Máiréad has developed a keen interest in both small animal and large animal medicine. Máiréad’s interest in veterinary stemmed from growing up on a dairy farm in Kerry.
Hazell Mullins BVM BVS
Hazell graduated from Nottingham University in 2013. She worked in a mixed practice in Kerry and moved to a more cattle focused practice in Bandon, before joining Abbeyville in 2017. Her main interest is dairy cows and she is very passionate about calf health and bovine surgery. Her hobbies include going to the gym, horse riding and has a self proclaimed addiction to shopping and all things fashion. She is also behind the Instagram veterinary blog « vetonthemoove » where she documents her day to day cases and experiences as a large animal vet.
Joanne Wheatley RVN
Joanne joined Abbeyville in 2011. Having qualified from St. Johns Central College she worked in Co. Kildare before returning back home to Cork. She completed her top-up degree in Veterinary Nursing through Napier University in 2017. Her main interests include medical nursing and client support but her hands are usually full helping owners with their insurance and running the Facebook page. She lives in East Cork with her partner, son, their cat Ollie and dog Lenny.
Sarah Cowhig RVN
Sarah graduated from St Johns College in 2015. She joined the team in 2017 but has been working in the pet care industry since 2011. She is both a small animal and large animal nurse and enjoys spending time both in the hospital with companion animals and out on farms TB testing cattle. She has a particular interest in anaesthesia and small animal surgery. In her spare time she enjoys music, fitness and spending time with her pets.
Ruth Armstrong RVN
Ruth is the Nurse who runs our Carrigaline branch. She was born and raised in Carrigaline and joined our team in 2015. She graduated from St. John’s College in 2013. She is passionate about weight loss and diets for animals so feel free to have a chat with her if you have concerns about your dog or cat’s weight. Ruth is also familiar with the kennels in the area and is happy to offer assistance in finding the right kennel for your dog.
Lisa O'Kelly RVN
Lisa graduated from St Johns Central College in 2010. She joined our team in 2018. Lisa is the large animal nurse and spends her time between our Togher branch and out on the farms assisting our large animal vets. In her spare time, Lisa loves spending time with her son and 2 dogs Frank and Skye.
Anna joined the Abbeyville team in 2018. Her role is to manage the hospital and branches working closely with the veterinary surgeons and nurses. Having completed her degree in Zoology from UCC, she continued her studies in UCC to gain her Masters in Management and Marketing. In her spare time she enjoys travelling and spending time with her 3 dogs Dixie, Xena and Fonzy.
Assistant Practice Manager
Sarah is our receptionist in Togher, and joined the Abbeyville team in 2018. She has over 20 years experience working with the public and adores meeting all your fur babies. Sarah is a newly-wed to James and in her free time enjoys spending time with her loved ones, road trips and the great outdoors.
Marguerite Murphy studied Animal Grooming and Animal Welfare in St Johns Central College, Cork. With many years grooming experience, Marguerite joined the Abbeyville team in 2015. Marguerite is based in our Togher branch and is proving extremely popular with all our clients.
Danielle studied Animal Grooming and Animal Welfare in St Johns Central College, Cork. Danielle joined us in 2017. Danielle is kept very busy in our Carrrigaline clinic.
Emer studied Canine Husbandry in St. Johns Central College in Cork. Grooming is her passion and her Maltese Coco is the best groomed pooch in town.
