VETERINARY SURGEONS

Richard Lane
MVB MRCVS

Director

Richard is one of the partners. He qualified from University College Dublin in 1981 and worked in Lismore Co. Waterford for 2 years doing mainly dairy and beef practice. He subsequently worked in Wexford Town for a year again in a mixed practice before joining Abbeyville in 1984. His areas of interests, are doing dairy practice especially herd health and vaccination programs. He has carried out a pilot project on Johnes disease control eradication in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Food. Outside of work Richards’s interests include hill walking, fishing and he is also a keen Munster rugby supporter. 

Fergus Smith

Director

Fergus is one of the partners. He qualified from University College Dublin(UCD) in 1992 and worked in a mixed practice in Co. Mayo and West Cork before joining Abbeyville in 1995.His areas of interest are bovine and equine practice particularly herd health, fertility and ultrasonography. He completed a post graduate certificate in Dairy Herd Health at UCD in 2014. He also has a keen interest in small animal medicine. Outside of work Fergus’ interests include cycling, skiing, supporting Munster and Douglas/Carrigaline Rugby and keeping his kids entertained evenings and weekends.

Michael Ryan
MVB

Director

Michael is one of the partners. He qualified from University College Dublin in 1997 and went to England where he worked in small animal practice in Essex and Kent. He then returned and worked in a mixed practice in Co. Kilkenny before joining Abbeyville in 2001. Michael is married to Rose has 4 children. His hobbies include being a taxi driver for the kids and playing bad golf and has also just taken up cycling. Michael’s special interests include orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery. 

 

Donal O Sullivan

Veterinary Surgeon

Donal qualified from UCD in 2010. He spent 2 years working in mixed practice in Northern Ireland, before returning home to Cork to join Abbeyville in 2012. Donal has a special interest in challenging medical cases, dermatology and dentistry. Donal also runs the acupuncture and pain management clinics. In 2018, He completed the UCD post graduate certificate in Small Animal Medicine.

Paul Humphreys
MVB

Veterinary Surgeon

Paul graduated from UCD in 2000. He has spent the majority of his 20 years as a vet in mixed practice apart from 3 years of exclusively small animal work in the north of England. He was working in west Cork for the last eleven years in a mixed practice. In his spare time, Paul has a few cattle and a cavachon Dougal who, along with his wife Deirdre and 2 sons Ruairi and Jacob, keep him on his toes.

Máiréad Foley
MVB MRCVS

Veterinary Surgeon

Máiréad graduated from UCD and joined the Abbeyville team in 2017. Since joining the practice, she has developed a keen interest in both small and large animal practice. Máiréad is currently undertaking a certificate in small animal medicine and diagnostic imaging with the RVC in London. Her interest in veterinary stemmed from growing up on a dairy farm in Kerry. 

Ken Lipsett

Veterinary Surgeon

Ken graduated from UCD in 2018. He hails from County Sligo. Ken worked for just under 3 years in West Cork as a mixed animal vet before joining the team in Abbeyville in February 2021. He has a keen interest in small animal surgery and is currently undertaking a certificate in small animal surgery with the BSAVA. He enjoys sea swimming in his spare time.

Connor Sheedy

Veterinary Surgeon

Connor graduated from the University of Bristol in 2013 and went straight into a farm animal internship. After a few years doing farm practice in the UK he headed to Australia, and then New Zealand, working with large dairy herds, before returning to the UK in 2019. His areas of special interest within dairy practice are fertility and infectious disease. He has recently relocated to Cork and joined the Abbeyville team in August 2021. Outside of work, Connor enjoys hiking and martial arts.

Sarah Cowhig
RVN

Head Nurse

Sarah graduated from St Johns Central College in 2015. She has been working in the pet care industry since 2011 and  joined the team in 2017. Previously she enjoyed mixed animal practice but now as our Head Nurse she is responsible for the day to day running of the small animal hospital. She has a particular interest in small animal surgery. In her spare time she enjoys music, travelling and outdoor activities.

Joanne Wheatley

Veterinary Nurse

Joanne joined Abbeyville in 2011. Having qualified from St. Johns Central College she worked in Co. Kildare before returning back home to Cork. She completed her top-up degree in Veterinary Nursing through Napier University in 2017. Her main interests include medical nursing and client support but her hands are usually full helping owners with their insurance and running the Facebook page. She lives in East Cork with her partner, son, their cat Ollie and dog Lenny. 

Ruth Armstrong

Veterinary Nurse

Ruth is the Nurse who runs our Carrigaline branch. She was born and raised in Carrigaline and joined our team in 2015. She graduated from St. John’s Central College in 2013. She is passionate about weight loss and diets for animals so feel free to have a chat with her if you have concerns about your dog or cat’s weight. Ruth is also familiar with the kennels in the area and is happy to offer assistance in finding the right kennel for your dog.

Chloe Webster

Chloe joined the team in 2019. Having completed her Zoology degree in UCC, she continued her studies in Veterinary Nursing in St John’s College and graduated in 2019. She has a particular interest in Animal Behaviour. In her spare time Chloe enjoys spending time with her son and dancing.

Sinéad joined the team in January 2020 after completing her studies in St. John’s Central College in 2019. Prior to studying Veterinary Nursing, she completed her Bachelor of Commerce in UCC. Sinéad has a great interest in orthopaedic and medical nursing. In her spare time, she enjoys going to the gym, listening to music and spending time with her furbabies, Charlie and Minnie

Maeve Maloney

Veterinary Nurse

Maeve joined our team in the summer of 2018 after completing a BSc in Veterinary Nursing in UCD. The travel bug hit in 2019 and she headed for Dubai. She rejoined our team in 2020 and we were delighted to have her back. She finds inpatient care a really rewarding part of the job and you can be assured your pets will get loads of cuddles. She loves spending time with her German Shepherds Gigi and Rolo.

Róisín Millard

Róisín joined the team in 2020 after completing her studies in Athlone Institute of Technology. Prior to studying Veterinary Nursing, she completed a degree in Environmental Science in NUIG. Róisín has traveled far and wide but has now settled by Corks lovely Lee. Róisín is passionate about promoting responsible pet ownership. She is also interested in fear free veterinary care. Róisín loves the outdoors and enjoys hiking and kayaking in her spare time.

Kaylyn joined our team in October 2020 after completing her BSc Honours in Veterinary nursing from Letterkenny Institue of Technology with a special focus on Emergency and critical care. Kaylyn enjoys inpatient care and has a keen interest in physiotherapy which she hopes to pursue in the future. She is from the Limerick countryside. In her spare time she enjoys reading, archery, and walking her two dogs.

Megan joined Abbeyville in 2020 after completing 2 years of work experience with us for her degree.  She qualified in Veterinary Nursing from St. John’s Central College.  Megan completed a degree in Arts in UCC before her love of animals took her in a different direction. She is passionate about animal welfare and loves getting to know all of our clients. Megan is a skilled artist and loves drawing her 5 pets. 

Clara Campion

Veterinary Nurse

Clara graduated from St. John’s Central College in 2013 and then joined the Abbeyville team in 2014. She was working part time in our Carrigaline clinic whilst completing her BSc General Nursing in UCC. She completed this degree in 2019 and decided she would miss the animals too much so has been working in Togher since. Clara is very adventurous and thoroughly enjoys skydiving and bungee jumping.

Aisling Twohig

Veterinary Nurse

Aisling qualified from Letterkenny Institute of Technology in 2021 and joined the Abbeyville team soon after. Before studying Veterinary Nursing, Aisling completed a BA majoring in Politics and Psychology from UCC. Aisling is the large animal nurse and spends her Mondays and Tuesdays assisting the LA vets TB testing. In her spare time, Aisling enjoys playing tennis, going to the gym and spending quality time with her 2 rough haired collies Lady and Molly.

Marguerite Murphy

Marguerite Murphy studied Animal Grooming and Animal Welfare in St Johns Central College, Cork. With many years grooming experience, Marguerite joined the Abbeyville team in 2015. Marguerite is based in our Togher branch and is proving extremely popular with all our clients.

Emer Kelly

Groomer

Emer qualified from St John’s Central College on completion of a 2 year full time course on canine husbandry/animal grooming. She joined the team in Abbeyville in 2015. With over 7 years of experience Emer is passionate about all of your pets. Emer is dog Mummy to Coco the maltese and they adore each other. Emer hails from the Northside of Cork and in her free time can be found walking Coco or spending time with her fiance Ryan grabbing a bite.

 

Breanne Cleary Mellerick

Groomer

Breanne studied animal grooming in St. John’s Central College and joined the team at Abbeyville in 2018. Her whole life, she has been an animal lover through and through. You can rest assured that your fur baby will be given plenty of attention and time with Breanne as she prides herself on her work. In her free time, she can usually be found walking her own beloved Maggie, the long haired German Shepherd.

Anna Brennan

Practice Manager

Anna joined the Abbeyville team in 2018. Her role is to manage the hospital and branches working closely with the veterinary surgeons and nurses. Having completed her degree in Zoology from UCC, she continued her studies in UCC to gain her Masters in Management and Marketing. In her spare time she enjoys travelling and spending time with her 3 dogs Dixie, Xena and Fonzy.

Sarah Murphy

Receptionist

Sarah is a receptionist in our Togher branch since joining the Abbeyville Team in 2018. She has over 20 years experience in customer service in many different avenues, and loves meeting both you and your fur babies!
Originally from Mayfield, now living in East Cork with her husband James, in her free time Sarah can be found spending time with her loved ones, or taking road trips. She also has an interest in photography, reading and singing. 

Danielle Hayes

Receptionist

After studying animal grooming at St John’s Central College, Danielle joined the Abbeyville team in 2017. She began her journey as a groomer at our Carrigaline branch; pampering our clients furry friends for over 2 years. Having previous administrative experience, she joined the reception team at our Togher branch in 2020. With 2 pets at home, Mr Binx and Bailey, Danielle loves working on the front desk and the variety of interactions with clients and their pets. In her free time, Danielle enjoys spending time with her family and fiancé Liam.
